WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT:

  1. Nearly 12% of New Jersey citizens are identified with a disability that limits their daily life activity — a population projected to grow significantly in the next decade
  2. The forum brings together disability advocates and lawmakers to discuss strategies to assist disabled citizens in their efforts to become productive citizens
  3. A summary of the forum proceedings will be sent to Governor Christie’s office

Dr. Sal Pizzuro, Executive Director of East Rutherford’s Disability Advocacy Services, Inc., is a specialist in Disability Law. “A harsh economic climate has made the employment of disabled individuals more problematic than ever,” he says. “People with disabilities are rapidly becoming members of society’s underclass that will experience a lifestyle distinctively separate from that of their non-disabled peers.”

The Hall Institute of Public Policy - New Jersey has published several papers on the state of the disabled in New Jersey. “Deep funding cuts are looming in the state budget,” says Hall Institute Executive Director Dr. Michael P. Riccards. “We hope this forum will find creative and viable ways to make sure our disabled citizens can lead healthy and productive lives in the years to come.”

The institute has published three books — The State of the Garden State, Reaction and Reform in New Jersey, and Into The New Millennium: New Jersey and The Nation. All three are compilations of the major papers posted on our website. A fourth volume, Creating A Common Future: New Jersey and Public Policy, was published online.

Michael P. Riccards, Executive Director, oversees all operations of the organization. He came to the Hall Institute from the College Board in Washington D.C., where he was responsible for public policy analysis and liaison with government officials. In 2008, he was appointed by Governor Jon S. Corzine as the State's representative on the national Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.
