Hall Institute Executive Director Michael P. Riccards, who was president of Shepherd College in West Virginia from 1989 to 1995 and worked with Senator Robert C. Byrd, issued the following statement today:

"The U.S. Senate and the American people lost one of the last great traditionalist Senators with the death of Robert C. Byrd. The first time I met him he gave me a beautiful autographed copy of his history of the Senate, and I gave him my history of the presidency. He loved history and respected the institutions of the nation, and insisted on the importance of the separation of powers in our government. His prophetic opposition to the mideast wars made him suddenly a hero to the liberals, despite his conservative background and voting record at time. But in the end, Robert C. Byrd loved the nation more than being on the six o'clock news."
